Buffer Setup Guide

Premium and above~5 minutes

Connect your AI assistant to Buffer to post, schedule, and monitor engagement across your social media channels. Buffer supports 11 platforms including X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, and Bluesky.

What you'll need

  • A Buffer account (Essentials plan or higher for multiple API keys)
  • At least one social media channel connected in Buffer
  • A FixedCostAgents account (Premium or Pro tier)

Step-by-step instructions

Generate a Buffer API key

Go to your Buffer settings at publish.buffer.com/settings/api and click “Create API Key”.

Give it a descriptive name like “FixedCostAgents” so you can identify it later. Copy the generated key immediately — Buffer will only show it once.

Buffer Free plan only allows 1 API key. If you need a dedicated key for your AI assistant (recommended), you'll need Buffer Essentials ($6/mo per channel) or higher, which provides up to 3-5 API keys.

Connect your social channels in Buffer

Before your AI assistant can post, make sure the social media accounts you want to manage are connected in Buffer. Go to Buffer channel settings and connect each platform you want to use.

Your AI assistant will only be able to post to channels that are connected in your Buffer account.

Add the API key to your FixedCostAgents portal

Log in to the FixedCostAgents portal and navigate to Agent Settings → Integrations → Buffer.

Paste your Buffer API key and save. Your AI assistant will securely store it in AWS Secrets Manager — the key is never saved to disk or exposed in environment variables.

Verify the connection

Message your AI assistant on any connected channel and ask it to list your Buffer channels:

“Show me my connected Buffer channels”

Your assistant should respond with a list of your social media accounts. If you see an error, double-check that your API key is correct and that you have channels connected in Buffer.

What your agent can do

Post and schedule

Draft social media posts, schedule them for specific times, or add them to your Buffer queue. Works across all connected platforms simultaneously.

Monitor engagement

Track likes, comments, shares, and impressions on published posts. Get engagement summaries in morning briefs or on demand.

Brainstorm content

Save content ideas to Buffer's idea board for later review and scheduling. Your assistant can draft multiple options for you to choose from.

Respect your limits

Automatically checks daily posting limits before scheduling to avoid exceeding platform-specific restrictions.

Engagement is monitor-only by default

Your AI assistant will never reply to, like, or repost social media content on your behalf unless you explicitly ask it to for a specific post or comment. Engagement data is for your awareness only.

Buffer API is in beta

Buffer's GraphQL API is currently in beta. While core features (posting, scheduling, channels) are stable, some capabilities may evolve. Individual comment text may not be available for all platforms — your assistant will report comment counts and direct you to the platform for full details when needed.
